There is no way to translate a Western name into Korean. Rochelle would mean "from the little rock" or is similar to Racheal, a biblical name. It's vacation so it would be hard to find someone who can explain Korean given names to me. Most given names are chosen based on all kind of things. Sometimes the mudang or a fortune teller is consulted. So it's hard to say.

I would keep Kang as surname since it's one of the many names. It looks like your name is based on the pronunciation of Rochelle.

This is Kameka Stephens again, and it is now 2009, and I still haven't had any good leads in finding my grandmother, who gave my father up for adoption back in the 1950's, and my father's Korean name is Choon Sik Yi, so if anyone can be of any help, please contact me at my email address which is as follows: kamekastephens@comcast.net, or you can contact me at kstephens@popeandland.com. Keep in mind I don't speak any Korean, nor can I read it. Thanks, and I do have one photo of my grandmother if that would be of any help, I will be glad to send it (the photo), to anyone who may think they have somewhat of a lead. Also, just to let you know my father dosen't even know who his biological father is at all....nothing not even a name of who it may be, so please help if you can.

Hartelijke groet, Chris Smeenk.
It's really informative and it shows how little Korean society has changed over the centuries! Only small changes...
For example I see many similarities how Korean people treat foreigners then and now. Fortunately Korea is (slowly) changing..

Wij zullen vanaf 9 april 4 maanden in Korea verblijven. Vanaf 1 mei zullen wij stage gaan lopen.

I am sorry but that won't show in a printing, because this is a java applet. As long as it is plain htm it will print, but all the fancy applets like flash etc. won't show in a printed page.

Dear Henny,

I'm part of the Korean Studies info list and thought I'd check out your website. It's very enjoyable! I'm currently working on publishing my dissertation, and sometimes I get overwhelmed with Korean sources, language, etc. It's good to read about someone else who loves Korea--very refreshing. Plus, info on Europeans in 17th c. Korea is fascinating.

Thanks!
Geachte heer Savenije,

It is with great interest that I read the information you gave on Hendrik Hamel. I am very interested in this subject because Hendrik Hamel wrote about Jan Janszoon Weltevree, the man who sailed from De Rijp (Netherlands) to Korea and became an important man. I am the mayor of the community of Graft-De Rijp and I am intending to honour Jan Janszoon Weltevree. We have a statue of this man in our village, a copy is in Seoul. Can you give me more information? Please email to: r.oosterop at graftderijp.nl Thank you very mucht.

I have been working on translations from Dutch to English, starting with a literal translation, so I have found what you did to be helpful. In some cases, I was able to find the translation of words from your translation. My latest project is to translate Onstelde-Zee, oft Zee-Daden, by Jodocus Hondius, from 1654. My most complete translation is Dr. Johan Elias' Vlootbouw in Nederland, which is over 91% translated. I am curious as to other sources for mid-17th Century Dutch word definitions. I am using Van Dale's Nederlands Engels, from 1999, and the 8th edition of Van Dale's Groot Woordenboek der Nederlandse Taal, Cassell's Dutch Dictionary (English-Dutch, Dutch-English), as well as the help of a gentleman whose native language is Afrikaans, and who speaks and reads Dutch, as well. Anyway, I have appreciated your site as another resource. Jim Bender jcbender at kentishknock.com www.kentishknock.com
